The Velia excavations
The city of Velia, formerly known as Elea, from which our village takes its name, dates back to 540 B.C. and is home to a very famous archaeological site, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to its great historical significance, Velia offers visitors enchanting scenery with panoramic views of the area. Every week the Elea club organises a guided tour of this location.
Paestum
Paestum is a very significant archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formerly known as Poseidonia, the city dates back to the 7th century B.C. and contains three splendid Doric temples that are still almost completely intact: the Temple of Neptune, the Temple of Hera and the Temple of Ceres. A visit to this place, which is only 45 km from the village, is not to be missed.
Cilento National Park
The National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano is made up of 180,000 hectares of land, including 80 municipalities and 8 Mountain Communities. The park also enjoys World Heritage status thanks to the rare balance that exists in this area between man and nature. The park offers all kinds of scenery, coastal areas, mountain areas, rivers, streams, forests and much more. More than 1,800 species of wild plants grow here, including the much sought-after Palinuro Primrose.
The Monastery of San Lorenzo
The Carthusian Monastery of San Lorenzo, also known as the Certosa di Padula, is an enchanting medieval monastery, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Carthusian Monastery is the largest in Italy and one of the largest in Europe with its 320 rooms, 500 doors, 550 windows, 13 courtyards, 100 fireplaces and 41 fountains. An architectural wonder not to be missed.
