Cilento takes its name from its geographical location, which is described as “Cis Alentum” or “on this side of the Alento,” the river that marks its boundary. It is the southernmost area of Campania, stretching from Palinuro to Sapri, overlooking 2 gulfs (the Salerno one and the Policastro one) and is surrounded by the Monti Alburni to the north and by the Vallo di Diano to the east. The Cilento, in fact, will amaze you even at the table, thanks to its delicious local products: homemade pasta, soppressata, buffalo mozzarella, caciocavallo podolico, Controne beans, and dried white figs.
This is precisely where the American scientist Ancel Keys spent more than 40 years to study and test the effects of the Mediterranean diet, which later became world-famous for its beneficial and preventive properties of cardio-vascular diseases. After all, the main ingredients of such a diet are olive oil, bread, cereals, vegetables, fruit, herbs, fish and wine, all of which can be found in abundance in Cilento, rigorously at km 0.
